Migration remains among the biggest challenges faced in Europe, Africa and the rest of the world. The last couple of years have seen millions of migrants have flocked into Europe from the Middle East, Asia and Africa. While some migrants from Africa may be in a genuine need for protection, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) ascertains that 7 in 10 people found crossing the Sahara desert or the Mediterranean sea are not in fact legitimate refugees but are economic migrants.
Each year, Hundreds and thousands of young Africans who embark on the journey through the Sahara desert and the Mediterranean sea to get into Europe end up as victims to life-threatening insecurity, instability, exploitation and abuse. Since 2016, over 5000 migrants mainly from Africa have lost their lives or simply disappeared trying to cross the Mediterranean.
Thousands more die or disappeared on the Sahara desert on the journey through Morocco, Libya, Algeria or Tunisia
The conference is a platform to evaluate the current economic migration crisis, debunk the truths about illegitimate routes and identify ways to engage local communities in Africa in efforts to control or contain the crisis. Guns and border control in Europe can not stop economic migration.
The ACEC-2018 will bring together individual participants, representatives of the civil society, other organizations and government agencies to deliberate on the subject . In conjunction with our Global Partners, we look forward to extending you a warm welcome in Antwerp..
